In our Knowledge Transfer to Close the Gap article, we revealed some of the statistics around the aging workforce and knowledge transfer challenges. For a leader with an aging workforce, a real pain point is the lack of documented processes and procedures.
See how our work with a client helped them improve business operations by reducing the stress and fear of their workforce retiring at a rapid rate.
The Task
A recently promoted manager had just inherited the oversight of several industrial machinery and equipment shop locations. Well-aware of the industry’s high percentage of aging workforce and the impending loss of job knowledge, he knew that job tasks required appropriate documentation to facilitate new employee training as well as current employee retraining and cross-training. Unfortunately, that documentation was either insufficient or nonexistent. The manager contacted Theresa for help in Process, Procedure, and Training Documentation.
The Action
Each shop site varied from physical location to shop size to employee job tasks to industrial relations and beyond. Success Trek customized both its approach to the project as well as the tangible items created (workflow maps, training guides, job aids, and training checklists). While our approach and resulting documents varied, we worked with each Subject Matter Expert to develop the content, relying heavily on video teleconferencing and email to communicate. In some instances, we were able to repurpose older material, share material between shop sites, and work with each location to help develop and include job task performance metrics.
The Result
The locations can now effectively train, retrain, and cross-train using their standardized onboarding and training materials. The inclusion of job task performance metrics now supports employee development. These materials also helped one of the locations with their ISO Certification process.
Success Trek’s work helped to Strengthen Workflow Processes by documenting processes, procedures, and training.
