Improve Critical Thinking Skills

Improve Critical Thinking Skills

“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein

Be a better problem-solver by improving your critical thinking skills.

Thinking critically (and creatively) is an intentional and reflective way of looking at things or circumstances, while problem-solving focuses on a specific situation. Critical-thinking and problem-solving are life skills that begin in childhood and follow us throughout our personal and professional lives. While we may have successfully navigated playground problems with the skills we had at the time, continued improvement is essential. Ideal employees and team members are those who can think critically and creatively, share thoughts and opinions, use good judgment, and make decisions.

In our continued quest to break down complex issues and offer simple solutions, we have these three recommendations from our team’s real-world experience and education to improve your critical thinking skills:

  1. Approach every situation with an open mind. Don’t let bias or preconceived notions influence your analysis – it’s important to analyze each situation independently. Remove individuals and relationships as you study the problem and formulate a decision.
  2. Consider how to communicate your decision. Be tactful and patient when explaining how and why you’ve reached your conclusions. Use data if available to support your findings but remember that not everyone can remove individuals and relationships from situations.
  3. Be creative when formulating your solution – push boundaries and break out of your routine. Taking this risk will help you and your team try new things and reinvent current processes while not rocking the boat. Remember that the most dangerous phrase in business is, “We’ve always done it this way.”
