Team performance affects an organization’s productivity, morale, and the overall quality of its product or service. When there is conflict, there is the potential to inhibit teamwork, which can delay projects, result in cost overruns, or decrease the effectiveness of the work. Successful teams make a considerable contribution to organizational productivity and efficiency. This month’s Blog is about how Success Trek worked with a client to uncover the root cause of performance roadblocks and identified ways to move past them.
The Task
The chief financial officer of a school corporation with an operating budget of over $100 million wanted to take an in-depth look into her team’s performance in serving the needs of the corporation’s employees and students. On the surface, the team worked well together; however, the CFO wanted to dive deeper into how the team functioned. Through a complimentary conversation, we agreed a more conversational approach with the team would be best; therefore, we scheduled a two-hour “Building A High Performing Team” workshop.
The Action
Theresa and the Success Trek team began customizing the content for the workshop. First, we gained clarity and focus on the current situation from each participant’s perspective. A pre-work survey aligned the workshop content with the expected outcome of strengthening their team’s performance.
During the workshop, Theresa’s skills as a facilitator ensured all participants were engaged in the process. As the pre-work survey results revealed, and the workshop discussion progressed, the objectives shifted to how the team could work better with the other departments and stakeholders versus among themselves.
The Result
Together during the workshop, the team agreed on several actions to strengthen their communication and collaboration skills with other departments and stakeholders. The team stated that they enjoyed discussing ideas to improve while tackling problems that required more time to resolve. After a 30-day check-in, we learned that team members continue to bring forward new ideas to get their work done more efficiently and improve the way they support and collaborate with other departments and stakeholders.
